Made it to San Diego!

We picked up Debby about 7 am and were on our way!  A very easy drive across the dessert -- not too much traffic, and while it was cold when we left Tucson (mid-50's) it was nice and somewhere in the low 70's by the time we got to Yuma.  We stopped for a quick lunch at Carl's, Jr. in El Centro, and reached our hotel -- Homewood Suites, Liberty Station in San Diego right about 2:30 pm.  Lovely suite -- two bedrooms, two bathrooms with connecting living/dining/kitchen in between, 312.  I really love the location -- it's on the creek next to the harbor and San Diego Airport, and while there are definitely airplanes coming in and taking off all day, inside one doesn't hear a thing, which is nice!

Rested a bit, and while Robert worked, Debby and I took a nice walk along the creek.  This is all either current military (Navy) or parkland and is a really beautiful area.  My favorite (and I'll try to get a photo this morning) is a mock small ship -- which is on dry land, next to the road.  It has been there for as long as I remember, and we've always laughed, as it is SO close to water, but definitely high and dry!  We've always thought of it as a training ship -- to teach new recruits the various parts of a ship -- but why, we've no idea, even if that's true or not!  Does make a good story, though!

Story of the Recruit!

At 5, seeing as it's Wednesday, the hotel was hosting a "Happy Hour."  Robert continued to work, but Debby and I went down to the lobby.  Absolutely lovely!  Cheeses, veggies, dips, soup and salad bar, even pita bread and hummus -- all excellent, served with beer, various types of wine and even Sangria, which Debby said was excellent!  I can definitely vouch for the chardonnay!

From there, we gathered up Robert and headed out for dinner.  We had a 6 pm reservation at our favorite San Diego restaurant, Jack & Giulio's, in Old Town San Diego.  From our hotel, it was less than a 10 minute drive, and Robert was able to find a great parking place almost in front of the restaurant.  Giulio's has been a San Diego institution for years, first in Pacific or Ocean Beach, and now in Old Town; fabuous Italian food.  We all ordered the same thing -- me, because it's the only thing on the menu I really crave, R ditto, and Debby because she loves shrimp!  Their Scampi Ala Giulio -- huge butterflied shrimp sauteed in white wine and garlic is absolutely incredible!!  Salads to start, served with garlic cheese bread were fine -- but the scampi ... oh boy!  We all actually finished our meals, although we did waddle out of the restaurant, we were that stuffed!

Fabulous scampi!

with pasta!

Back to the hotel and at least Debby and I turned in early.  Not sure how late R worked...but as tomorrow is a transit day, he won't have too much of an opportunity!  So!  On to Mazatlan!!
